Chilli - Gorria / 10 seeds

(Capsicum annum)

The typical Basque chilli / Intense taste

Variety description: The chilli from the Basque Country. It is just as typical for the region as the beret and is an essential part of both French and Spanish cuisine.

It is also used to make the famous powder `Piment d´Espelette`, which is only prepared by hand in 10 French villages in the Nive Valley. The fruits are harvested when ripe and dried in the sun. The fields are all family-owned and the cultivation has been continued traditionally for 400 years. The fine and fruity spiciness is only found in this southern French variety. 1 kg of powder is obtained from 8 kilos of fresh scotches. And one plant produces around 500 g of chillies per year.

It produces bright, fiery red, tapered fruits and impresses with its intense, but not too spicy taste. On the Scoville heat scale, it has a rating of 1500 to 2500. It tastes particularly delicious in Basque omelettes, pizza with fish and meat, and desserts.

Cultivation: Before sowing, moisten the soil, sprinkle seeds on it, cover very thinly and press down lightly. At 20°-26°C, the seeds germinate after 8-14 days.

Care: Give the young plants suitable fertilizer at the beginning of May. Special tomato and pepper fertilizer has a long-term effect and is easy to work into the soil. The location should be bright to sunny and warm. Water generously. At night, the temperature should not fall below 16°C.

Pepper plants always look neat and become even more beautiful when the fruits turn from green to red in late summer/early autumn or decorate the balcony or terrace in yellow or dark purple. Then the harvest takes place and you can use this healthy vegetable in a variety of ways. Enjoy your meal!

  • Use suitable humus-rich soil or ready-made special soil.
  • It is best to sow in pots straight away. February to April is ideal. For outdoor cultivation, the end of April to mid-May is sufficient. The cultivation period is 12-14 weeks, depending on the variety.
  • Fertilize generously with tomato / pepper fertilizer or lots of compost.
  • For good soil, you should water a lot, as the plants only develop few roots and therefore cannot store much.
  • Give the young plants a stick to support them.
  • Break out the first flower / fruit. This increases the yield of the ripening fruit.
  • The water used for watering must not be colder than 14°C.
