Spoon leaf sundew / 200 seeds

(Drosera spatulata)

The easiest sundew of all!

Interesting facts: This sundew, which is so easy to cultivate and has often reddish to red tentacles, is widespread. Its range extends from Asia to the Philippines and as far as southeast Australia. But it can actually be found on all continents.

The spoon leaf sundew is one of the sticky traps and forms flat rosettes that sit on the ground. The tentacles or trapping leaves are shaped like spoons at the end.

When the humidity is a little higher, these tentacles are covered with large sticky nectar drops, which attract and catch the insects. The flower sits on a 20-25 cm high flower stalk and appears white or pink.

It takes just half a year from sowing to flowering. The germination time when grown from the fine seed is also only 2-5 weeks. The seeds germinate in light and are therefore only lightly pressed down. They need a period of frost beforehand and must therefore be exposed to the cold for 2-3 weeks (e.g. refrigerator/freezer) or placed outside in winter.

And this easy-care Drosera needs less light than most other sundew species.

As a subtropical plant, the carnivorous plant likes to be kept warm all year round and can cope with a cool place in winter. However, a warmer location is just as suitable. The spoon-leaf sundew needs a higher humidity to produce a large amount of droplets. 40% is enough or you can spray the plant very lightly. Watering should always be done from below, i.e. in a saucer or similar.

Ready-mixed carnivorous soil or a mix of peat and sand in a ratio of 3:2 is suitable as a substrate.

The sundew can survive the winter in both cool and warm conditions. Simply cut out unsightly or brown tentacles with scissors.
