Nepenthes khasiana / 10 seeds
Worth knowing: It is the only Nepenthes species in India. It forms particularly long, almost 20 cm cylindrical pitchers. These are light green and spotted with red and only slightly bulbous. The lid is slightly reddish.
Origin: Highlands of India
Cultivation: The seeds can be grown indoors all year round. They require high humidity to germinate (can be achieved by covering the seed container). Germination takes place after 4-6 weeks. Loose, not too acidic insectivorous soil is suitable as a substrate. Additions of sand, clay, perlite and bark are recommended. The Nepenthes also grows in hydroponics.
Location and light conditions: The Nepenthes is best cultivated hanging and the most beautiful plants are obtained in a bright, partially shaded place. Light is very important for healthy growth. In autumn and winter, hang the plant in as bright a place as possible. In spring and summer, 50% of daylight is enough (do not expose it to direct sunlight or to direct sunlight for more than 4-5 hours). If in doubt, shade it.
Care: The pitcher plant likes a little more humidity. If the air is too dry, young pitcher buds will start to dry out. Therefore, spray the plant with water more often (especially in winter when the heating is on). Only use decalcified water (rainwater, boiled water or softened water) to spray. If you do not decalcify, the plant will be covered with a white lime crust after a few days.
The air-permeable soil should always be moist. You can either water the plant twice a week or immerse the plant pot up to the top edge in room-temperature water for about 2 minutes (preferably in a plastic bucket) and hold the pitchers to one side.
By cutting back the old main shoots (cutting back about a third), the growth of the shoots below is encouraged and new and beautiful pitchers are formed. In most cases, annual pruning is sufficient.
