Vermiculite is a mineral formed by iron or magnesium silicates, from the mica group. It originates mainly from the hydrothermal alteration of biotite.

It is used as a substrate in hydroponic crops, as aggregate to make low-density concrete, as a thermal and acoustic insulator, in fire extinguishers, as a filter element, as protection of fragile materials or equipment, to increase the viscosity of lubricating oils, as a moisture absorber. and other liquid contaminations and as an excipient in various products, including medications.

Its structure is laminar, containing some water. By rapidly raising the temperature of the vermiculite, an expansion known as exfoliation is generated, resulting in a product with metallic reflections, brown in color, with low apparent density and high porosity.
