Tamarillo / 100 seeds
(Cyphomandra betacea)
Tree tomato
Variety description: The tamarillo is a fast-growing pot plant that reaches a height of up to 2 meters and has large, heart-shaped leaves. In our country, it produces pink flowers from the third year onwards. The fruits need warmth to ripen. A winter garden or greenhouse would therefore be ideal.
The fruits are egg-shaped, dark red with a few light stripes and weigh 50-100 grams. The juice is ideal for making a sauce for pudding.
Cultivation: The seeds for tomatoes can be sown from the beginning of January to the end of May. At 20° - 25°C, the seeds germinate after 5 - 14 days. For faster germination, you can pre-soak the seeds overnight in a damp cloth. Always pre-grow on the windowsill or in the greenhouse until mid-March. The tomato plants can only be put outside after the frost.
Care: To ensure a dense, shrub-like tree growth, it should be cut back heavily in winter because it grows very quickly and otherwise somewhat stubby. Water very little in winter. Just make sure that the soil does not dry out. A bright location between 10° and 16° C in a greenhouse, conservatory or in a room is ideal. You can repot the plant in the second spring. The plant does not have any special soil requirements.
