An African Chili - Small but mighty!

Variety description: The Bird's Eye Chili - called "Birds Eye Pepper" in English, looks and grows like the Tabasco Chili and its pods are extremely hot. In Africa, the main growing area for this small-leafed chili plant, they grow in Zimbabwe and Malawi. The chili plant reaches a height of around 1.20 m and in our latitudes growth is limited and is 50 cm. It takes around 90 days for the pods to ripen and the taste is best in the first 3-4 years.

The small fruits dry excellently and can be used very well as whole pods for chili con carne and spaghetti bolognese. They can also be used well ground into flakes and as a powder.

Give the young plants suitable fertilizer as early as the beginning of May. Special tomato and pepper fertilizer has a long-term effect and can be easily worked into the nutrient-rich soil. The location should be bright to sunny and warm. The more sunlight the plants get, the better they thrive - 5 hours of sun per day is ideal, but this might be difficult here. Water generously and the water temperature should not be below 14°C. At night the temperature should not fall below 12°C. Chili plants always look neat and become even more beautiful when the fruits turn from green to red in late summer/early autumn or decorate the balcony or terrace in yellow or dark purple. Then the harvest takes place and you can use this versatile species. Enjoy your meal - if possible!

Before sowing, moisten the soil, sprinkle seeds on it, cover it very thinly and press down lightly. At 20°-26°C the seeds germinate after 8-14 days. You can also just press the seeds onto the soil, as they are light germinators.

The germination rate is around 85% and only decreases very slowly.
